Running Out Of Breath And Time Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Running Out Of Breath And Time

There!
At the bottom of a rut.
Stuck.
And...
Running out of breath.
Running out of time and luck.
Are those left exhausted.
Slowly climbing back up.
From allowing their minds.
Found to find themselves,
Blindly following behind...
A leader to believe,
Had their best interests.
Entrusted not to undermine.
A way of life.
To fraud and corrupt.
Yet...
Heading towards complete,
Destruction.
A disaster to have it had.

Running out of breath.
Running out of time.
Becoming conscious,
Of what they were doing.
To themselves and others.
Committing to permit.
A chipping away,
Freedoms and entitlements.
Yet convinced...
A country and its democracy,
Claimed to be loved.
Must be defended from threats.
By those of other ethnic colors.
Their own fellowmen.
Threatening to end,
Precious standards to value.
Although...
Those chipping away.
Had no respect,
For themselves to value.

And...
This witnessed to observe,
Their spreading of ignorance.
With the diseasing germs,
Of a hatred learned.
And a fear of losing,
A quality of life they chose...
To choose to abuse.
For the sake of an image,
Faked to delude truth.

Invited they were,
To ignite and in broad daylight.
An insurrection to perform.
By one who has yet to prove,
To either be a leader...
Or patriotic!

Running out of breath.
And hoping there is still time,
Left.
To save themselves.
And minds to have found them,
Foolishly made to be stupid!
