Seeking Inspiration

The poetry contest deadline is coming up soon.
One of the categories is "Poetry for Children".
That's something I've never tried to do before,

so I decided that I might try it this time,
but it's been difficult coming up with an idea.
What in the world would children like in a poem?

Kids, do you wonder why
we humans cannot fly?
We have no wings; that's why!

Hmmmm...That doesn't seem to work very well.
Most kids probably have never wondered about that
at all. Or maybe they have. It's been way too long

since I was a kid. Did I ever wonder about things
like that? I know I used to watch the clouds
and wonder why they changed shapes the way

they do. How can it look like a pig one minute
and like Donald Trump a minute or two later?
(I know what you're thinking, but don't say it!)

I bought me a pig in a poke,
but someone has pulled a big joke!
I'm fit to be tied,
for a cat was inside!
Now my money's all gone, and I'm broke!

That's not going to work, either. Kids won't know
that a poke is a sack, and that people used to sell
cats in sacks, pretending that pigs were inside.

There has to be something I can write about.
Children like animals, don't they? Puppies
and bunnies, kittens and little fuzzy chicks.

Today I saw three ravens feeding on a deer carcass.
Got to be something there, right? A bit like Goldilocks
and the three bears? Naw, scratch that. Keep thinking.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I planned to use a photo of three ravens feeding on a deer carcass, and I actually found one , but decided not to use it, as it was too gruesome, so I chose the live deer instead.

I like the way you seek inspiration and let us into your mind as you do so. This is clever. Hope you also found a topic for a contest poem!

I did find a topic, wrote a children's poem, and entered it in the contest. It did not place. I will try the same poem in the same category again this year. A different judge and different competition... who knows?

kids like to walk on high shaky walls They like to have their own way always They wonder why they can never have their own way ever They wonder why grampa always has to be so bossy When they yell at grampa it is over and they lose but they do it again next time. They like iot when we draw and construct things but then they are bored and had en ough and tear the drawings up (age 6)
