Slaying The Beast Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Slaying The Beast

Laying quiet inside,
In all our minds at times.
Is that beast.
Not wishing nor to want,
To be irritated or disturbed.
Yet...
Nerve pluckers have a way,
Of crossing that line.
Ignoring the warning signs.

Who is it that does not live,
With a mood changing attitude.
Done to choose to be left alone.
Without having to explain,
Something reminisced.
Or a recent experience,
They would rather not discuss.
To know if left alone,
No one else will suffer...
Through a raised eyebrow.
Or from both sides of a mouth,
Witness foam come out.

'I warned and told you,
Not to call.
Or knock on my door.
To insist on paying me a visit!
But no!
Louder you kept knocking.
And louder I said,
NOT TODAY.
GO AWAY.
I AM SLAYING THE BEAST.
INSIDE OF ME.
AND THIS IS NOT THE TIME,
YOU DO NOT WANT IT...
ON YOU RELEASED! '

But no.
You refused to go away.
Continuing to knock.
Ignoring my advice.
To laugh!
Determining to enter.
Choosing my words heard,
Said to disobey!
And when I opened the door,
You screamed.
But that to do was just too late.
Now...
Sit!
And quietly.
Or if you prefer...
Having your head chopped off.
You found me,
In the right mood to do it!

-I...uh...
I can come back.
I didn't think you were serious.-

'Too late.
You caught me in the midst,
Of an unexpected...
TRANSFORMATION.'

-How...how long,
Is this going to take?
Are those fangs real? -

'Who knows?
You are the first,
To witness them exposed.
Sit!
Quietly.
And do nothing,
That will give me a reason...
To have you discover,
If they are real or not!
I warned you.
But you refused to listen.'

-I...uh...I was on my way,
To the store.
You need anything?
Bread, vegetables?
How about...
A cup of hot coffee?
Or...
A few slices of fresh meat? -

'Fresh?
Fresher than the twitching flesh,
Before me? '

-You are scaring me! -

'Calm down.
Don't move.
I'll be right back! '

-Don't leave me.
Where are you going? -

'Hopefully to chill out.
Without being disturbed,
By a daredevil.
And stop looking at me.
Like I'm the one crazy!
Finally your mouth is shut.'

-May I go now? -

'Of course.
What's the problem? '

-When you said,
You were SLAYING the beast? !
What happened to it? -

'It sat.
Quietly.
With its mouth made to close! '
