Something Special Happens... Poem by Reva Kern

Something Special Happens...

Rating: 5.0

Once in a while
When least expected,
Something Special happens
Transforming a place
Altering a time
Measuring a moment
Changing an ordinary day
Into one of
Extraordinary dimensions -
From Somewhere
Out of Nowhere
The twitch of a long tail
Captures my attention,
While curious eyes
Meet mine
In silent amusement
Watching with casual interest
From a few feet away,
Then it is gone -
Suddenly
Swiftly
A figment of my imagination?
Such a short visit,
But the memory,
Oh, the memory
Of the mountain lion
Will last a lifetime.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem needs an explanation.....
I was riding my horse in the arena concentrating on our dressage exercise and looking down at my horse's neck to see if it was in the proper position when she stopped in mid- stride, calmly and quietly which made me look up, and that's when I saw the cat.The fact that my horse wasn't frightened or even startled that it appeared suddenly meant to me that she was familiar with it.That it had obviously been hanging around the ranch. At the time, I didn't know it was a mountain lion (which is also called the Puma)thinking all mountain lions looked like the African lion with the long shaggy mane which obviously this cat did not have.I was thinking maybe it was a bobcat. In any event, after a slight hesitation, I urged my horse to continue our practice and by the time we made it around the circle again, it was gone. When I returned home I called the Mountain Conservancy to inquire as to what kind of a cat I had seen and was told not only that it was a mountain lion, but that it was a very special experience because they were hardly ever seen.....and that is what inspired me to write the poem.
