Soul For A Devil Poem by Kewayne Wadley

Soul For A Devil

He awoke from his coma still young as he was when he was first stuck with such a fate
The years grew older as his face reflected the memory he still had before going under
Although the war was gone he had gotten word that his love had died by his side some years before
His heart sunk
The machine that had helped him breathe for so long crashed against the ground
The doctors tried to restrain him
Though weak his rage drove him mad in an instant
He rubbed the tattoo he got on his wrist that matched hers
A matching feather that symbolised nothing height nor weight could separate their love
Time proved otherwise as her heart grew heavy with the thought that her love may not return she grew sick in an instant the chills became colder
The doctors as well as nurses couldn't begin to explain the events that took place
Blood splattered against the cold dotted tiles as he ripped the I.V's from his arms to rush to his love
He grabbed the doctor by his neck as his eyes quickly grew impatient,
The doctor told of everything he knew
The plot where she was buried that went unmarked
As they had grown poor the funeral wasn't much, in fact it was small because no one knew of the woman except the staff that catered to her every whim
When asked she'd only reply bring my love back to me
When confronted with her headstone the young man broke down
He kissed the ground with his knees as his tears mixed with the dirt on the now lukewarm day
His gown took to the wind as he apologized to his love over and over again
Caressing the dirt that shone of her skin
Dreaming of the last time he saw her smile
Pretending to hold her just once more as he looked to the sky
He begun to dig his hands in the earth
Burying his hurt as he dug closer to her
Hand over hand he had to see her once more
He no longer cared for what was left of his body
he just dug as the plot became deeper
With everything he could muster he drove into the ground
The thoughts that ate him away
The dreams that have now faded
The children they one day planned to have
He gave to the dirt as he dug closer to his love
His hands began to hit the casket
His body grew weary
He tried his best to pull it open
Repositioning himself
falling constantly
Tears steaming down his face as he feared he wouldn't see her once more
a strong stinch began to tingle his nose
Still he dug until the dirt loosened around the opening
He looked up at the sky
He begged to God up above
The life he lived wasn't perfect he stole he has in fact killed but in the last instance he did in all in attempting to provide a better life
Without the only thing that gave him life it meant nothing
He let God know that much was clear
He embraced the nothingness that awaited him as his body grew weak
He opened the casket to see his lovers wilted body
He balled as a child as he held what was left of the face that use to bring him so much joy
He held her as he rocked back and forth as she use to hold him on many a night
He called to the lord above
He called to the devil beneath him
At that moment anyone that could ease the pain that distraught the reality that quickly sunk in
He tried to breathe life into her only for it to become the air he quick resented
For he could breathe and she couldn't
He spoke aloud take me instead
take me for her soul was pure in heart
her love was one to behold in his eyes
Her body laid there lifeless
Still unaffected
He called out to the sky once more
Damning God for taking the only thing that gave life meaning
