St Kabeer's Couplets 14: Let A Man Be A Winnowing Pan

Rating: 5.0

Let a saintly Samaritan
Be like a winnowing pan,
Letting the husk go flying by,
That lets food-grains haply lie.

Given here under is the original couplet in Hindi script, and its transliteration in English Roman.

साधु ऐसा चाहिए, जैसा सूप सुभाय,
सार-सार को गहि रहै, थोथा देई उड़ाय।

Sādhu aisā chāhiye, jaisā sūpa subhāya;
Sāra-sāra ko gahi rahai, thothā deyee uđāya.

A man of discrimination should be able to pick up the essence of things; be able to segregate husk from food-grains as this couplet says; or reach out to the kernel of truth from well-dressed untruth, or good from bad. A soop is a house-hold device used to do this.

Topic: truth, essence, guru
