St Kabeer's Couplets 16: Weigh Every Word Ere Uttered

Rating: 5.0

Priceless the words ye mouth,
That all know to mouth, few make couth.
Mull over every word,
Weigh by heart's scale ere uttered.

Given here under is the original couplet in Hindi script, and its transliteration in English Roman.

बोली एक अनमोल है, जो कोई बोलै जानि,
हिये तराजू तौलि के, तब मुख बाहर आनि।

Bolī ek anmol hai, jo koi bolai jāni;
Hiye tarājū tauli ke, tab mukha bāhar āni.

Everyone knows to speak, but few know the value of their words and words' weightage. Kabeer advises people to weigh every word with the weighing balance of their heart before it is uttered. He is a fool of the worldly school that knows this not.

Topic: words, value

Words are powerful. It can inspire but it can also destroy the reputation of a person. We must tame our words with our heart. An excellent Quatrain full of wisdom and insight. It must be read by all. On to my Poem List.
