Take Off That Mask Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Take Off That Mask

A wishing with it wanted,
To return back to that comfortability...
Of a 'normalcy' missed.
And a functional way of life.
Burdened with pretence and dysfunctions.
May for many praying.
Faithfully with their fingers crossed.
But these days of 'Social distance',
And people asked to keep their faces masked.
To prevent more folks,
From becoming victims of a virus to pass.
Could one day most will come to remember,
How an ugliness to spread it...
Kept them less judgemental,
On appearances and looks.
Found to find,
What is covered up...
Appeals more to the imagination.
And the discovery of this,
Is much more attractive.
Than anything ever before to have done.

"Just because I am wearing a mask,
Don't look me up and down.
Like you don't know who I am."

-I apologize young lady.
I did not realize my eyes,
Were on you.
Probing you as if,
A delicious piece of cake.
Who are you?
Looking so fine and gorgeous!
Take off that mask.-

"Now.
Is this better? "

-Oh.
Yes. Yes, of course.
I know exactly who you are.
How have you been?

"I..."

-Excuse me.
I didn't realize what time it is.
You have a good day, okay.
I have to hurry up to get to the store.
Before it closes.-

"Closes?
They just opened up.
It was just an hour ago! "

-Seriously?
Uh...
My list is so long.
One never knows,
Who inside might decide to close early.
And I don't want to be caught up,
Being distracted.
Not today.
With all these changes being made.-

"Ain't that the truth.
You know yesterday I had gone to..."

-Lord.
I can't believe how time flies.
Enjoy your day, okay?
Gotta go.-
