The Choir Poem by Dorothy Good

The Choir

Rating: 5.0

The choir arose in their robes so divine,
The director's rod struck the air just in time,
Together, they lifted their voices in Praise,
They lifted their hearts on this day of all days.
The music soon floated across the large space
Their song, a rendition of 'Amazing Grace'.
Alas, from the singers, came glances and frowns
Some looking disturbed at the singers around.
The Director, he missed not a note, nor a beat
He kept on directing each singer with ease.
Ms.Jantzen gave glance to Walter, who wheezed
She frowned as he stifled an asthmatic sneeze.
Sir Walter was standing right next to Marie
Who was singing so lustily, slightly off key.
And, who is that voice oh, so loud, in the back?
Oh, please, Mr. Choir Director, could that be old Zach?
Ms. Ethel's sharp elbow was giving a punch.
There's someone that's not keeping time in the front,
Oh, please, Arthur, sing with less air in your throat?
There's likely a whistle that's heard, not a note!
Miss Florence it's obvious, sings through her nose
If I were the Director, I'd tell her to go.
The Director kept nodding, his big heart was stirred,
The audience silent, in awe what they heard,
The music that came from the choir in the loft
Was floating on air like a blanket so soft.
It soothed Mrs. Jane in the grief of her day
It calmed Mrs. Edwards as her nerves seemed so frayed.
It spoke to old Elmer who'd strayed from the Lord,
The music of heaven that spoke of God's Word.
And so the Director, with one downward stroke,
He silenced the singers, and bowed as he spoke,
'I thank you my singers, the gift of your song,
Amazing, the Grace, as each gift blends in one.
Your singing was graced by God's love so divine,
The hearts that were stirred were a blessing to mine.
Each one on his own, is not perfect you see,
Together, you make such supreme harmony.'
A standing ovation of applause was given
And as they departed, their hearts turned t'ward heaven.
