The Deferred Colossus Poem by Raj Dronamraju

The Deferred Colossus

He could have been big, he remained small instead
An indifferent colossus makes choices that affect many
And the generations toil without question under a veil of self-delusion
They don't seem to care that they don't have long to wait

"Do it" but from that height the human voice only sounds the same as mouse like squeaking
Filling the days with inactivity
And that inactivity can be seen many miles away
The tourists of inactivity come to watch and celebrate a lack of inspiration

The day he had sex, he felt like a rebel
He kept a journal, he had a commemorative plaque made
But it was like he was still invisible
Not even the word "sex" roused the rabble

A giant stays that way because no one cuts him down to size
Not one blade of grass crushed, not one eardrum bent
Any conflict or decision put off to another time
It's been so long since he scratched the heavens in either fury or wonder
