The Diabetic Patient Poem by Daya Nandan

The Diabetic Patient

He was sent to us from the clinic nearby,
Because his sugar levels were ridiculously high
This elderly man who claims to take his medication,
The same story repeats daily in my nation,

After further questioning he admitted skipping his insulin jabs,
Because it was uncomfortable feeling the needles stabs,
He skipped his meds for 1 month and follow ups for 2 months straight,
Because he believed that herbal medicine was making him feel great,

We hydrated him and dosed him with insulin to bring down the glucose,
For once in diabetic ketoacidosis death will be close,
After many hours his sugar was still uncontrolled as hell,
As a month of skipping medication made his body unwell,

The families often scold us claiming our medication is not effective,
Yet they don't question their parents like a true detective,
What use is the best medication if you do not even take it?
What use is m treatment plan if the patients cannot commit?

His blood was no longer acidic but his sugar levels were still bad,
Once his family found out the truth and soon became sad,
We saved him and admitted him to the ward nearby,
In hopes he will be serious once discharged and tells us good bye,

People have to stop believing in traditional medication,
Addingthemselves to the medication defaulters within our nation,
At the end of the day their carelessness leads them back here,
Where we have to struggle and work to save their life so dear,

They shouldn't trust the false hope given by traditional healers,
That give out questionable traditional medication like drug dealers,
The elderly population being their primary target population,
Adding to the morbidity and mortality statistics within our nation.

Fully agree with the message within this wonderfully written poem. I like the rhymes and the structure of the poem very much too. I hope that all patients within our Beautiful Malaysia will see the truth.
