The Dragons' Christmas Poem by Marilyn Shepperson

The Dragons' Christmas

Three dragon brothers, gold, red and green
Decided one winter, they would make Christmas dinner
Inviting their sister, her current mate and two offspring
Thinking it would be easy and fun
So, it's half past one on Christmas Day
Thick snow is lying outside
Donald the gold dragon is down in the kitchen
Of the old abandoned castle, where they live
Dressed in a chefs hat and apron, oven mitts on his shoulder
He's been trying to do all the cooking
Since early that morning; been up since before seven
But there's something wrong with the cooker
And he hasn't got very far
In doing the cooking the old fashioned dragon way
With plenty of whisky to enhance his flame
Surrounded by the burnt offerings
He now leans tipsily against the cupboards
On his mobile phone to various companies
To try and find someone who'll come
Sort out the problem and fix the thing
Meanwhile in the dining room
Younger brother Darcy, the green
Has been sent to finish laying the table
He started, it's true, full of good intent
A glass of brandy to fortify him
In this boring job
When he spied a card, he hadn't yet seen
And sat down to read it
Now the card was very funny
Darcy naturally began to laugh
Forgetting he'd drunk the brandy
He reduced the card to ashes
Finally upstairs in the large lounge
Even younger brother red David
Had been told by the others
To complete the wrapping of the gifts
Now he is also fond of a tipple
And with neither brother to say, ' Enough'
Has finished a whole decanter of sherry
Then noticed the fairy is not on the tree
Grabbing a ladder from nearby
He climbs to the top of the tree
There isn't enough room inside
For dragons to use their wings
But he hasn't secured the safety catch
So the whole thing is about to collapse
There's about to be a major catastrophy
Because the tree stands to
The delicate old crystal chandellier
And oh by the way
The guests are due at any moment.
