The Great War Poem by Paul Warren

The Great War

Do you wonder what they thought
Or if they knew about fighting
What was on their mind
When they enlisted in the war

The War started so far away
Did they want to be in it
Were they carried away
And was it all in fun with mates

When the guns bellowed
And the bullets flew around
Were their minds changed
To wondering why they went

And what made them stay
In the mud and the blood
Until it was called off
And they went home

You see it in their eyes
It was all stored up
To surface once and a while
When suffering continued on.

Lest we forget.
