The Smooth Evening Poem by Sylvia Frances Chan

The Smooth Evening

The Smooth Evening

just returned from a visit to the sick
I was also allowed to partake of the dinner
I didn't want dessert
because the desserts in that rehabilitation center are not tasty
whether they are called blueberry dessert or vanilla-curd-peach
to my sense of smell, they all taste like almonds
I never really liked that almond thing

As long as I'm invited there to eat, I don't want dessert
the kitchen already knows that

By the way, I find the atmosphere friendly,
just like my own family
But remember, I only visit the sick
especially to pay attention to the sick
I heard there aren't enough nurses
but I don't replace them, I'm not a nurse
only volunteering during the week

which I enjoyed so much when I got home,
that the moon had become a little fuller
and greeted me so warmly again
No one can take that joy away from me
such an intense warm feeling throughout my body
the moon has grown and showed itself clearly
you could tell she was proud of her mature body
she was in the company of one-star

on such lunar evenings, the streets are usually covered
with a thin layer of ice
I drove very carefully
coming home was the warm welcome of the friendly moon
That did something to me, I felt very happy
seen and talked to the sick
complemented by the warm welcome of the friendly moon

The Smooth Evening
POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
NOTES: On a freezing evening, the streets leading home were covered in thin ice, the temperature was only minus 4 degrees, but the perceived temperature is minus 15 degrees, yes that is the Netherlands at its best. On such evenings, despite the severe cold, the weather is quite pleasant for walking.

No wonder, the moon greeted you with such warmth and love. What a beautiful day!

My dear Friend Sylvia, On a cold day you drove to visit the sick and spend some time with them, even if you did not eat the desert. That is so kind of you Sylvia.
