Our pride, our strength,
The soldiers of Seventy-One.
Blacksmiths, potters, fishermen, and farmers,
All carried the same thirst within—
They would win victory through blood,
With no fear of giving their lives.
Therefore, students stood guard
Through sleepless nights on the streets.
Women too pushed aside their veils
And kindled the fire of sacrifice.
Bandits and marauders struck,
Cities and towns stood still,
And in the scent of fresh blood,
Hundreds of sparks burst into bloom.
In the peaceful nests of distant villages,
Fire was kindled with poured petrol;
Even the rivers raised their waves,
Heavy with the stench of thousands of corpses.
That dark night of March 25—
Do you remember?
In ruthless brutality,
The golden children were slaughtered.
The blue lotuses raise the flag,
A symbol upon blood-soaked green grass.
Helpless days pass amid calamity,
And terror enters the hearts of the people.
The tragic memory of Seventy-One—
Do you remember?
Blood keeps falling.
The young burst forth in furious passion,
Determined to seize victory at any cost.
The brave rush onto the battlefield,
Their daring flashing like fearlessness—
Amid the turbulent torrents of blood.
Knowing the coming victory of the Bengalis,
The cowards fall into surrender.
That one day, the sixteenth of December—
Do you remember?
The sun of victory rises
In every home of Bengal.
A smile blooms again upon the faces of the unfortunate,
Crimson flowers bloom across roads and fields.
It seems—this is the very color
Of the martyrs' spirit.
Through this living symbol of that spirit,
May the Bengali people recognize their own identity.
