Moans of minor chord jazz slip in unlit dreams
Morning reminds me
Muslim prayer
Jagged back into jet lag,
drifting through this waking womb
I remember old men devouring newspapers in the Gardens of Basavanagudi
I take the metro to be one of them
Five rupees to the paper man
The Hindu in hand
The Gandhi Bazaar path comes back, but why the stillness?
Too early for market veins to pulse
But cows do the rounds
Cudding a parade of roadkill flowers
My favorite coffee powder place
An idle, now urinating cow pins in the merchant
And I'm the only one distracted
The lure of these cows
Fresh flowers for puja
I follow a cow to Jayanti Garden, analog as I remember
Vines on the garden edge blow their breezy green
And rows of barefoot old uncles perch in the foliage. Pouncing
Feasting on newspaper prey of the day
The news of the world in ink had always felt paper thin.
A midwest paperboy doesn't forget freezing fingers
And his frozen toes
But even winter in India
can thaw these mid-life bones
And at least today, I'm ready to read and hunt.
I'm ready to join team old guy

batt, your uncle denis directed me to your poems, and i just read all three. in general you have a recognizable voice, and i like the accessibility of your poetry. in this poem i particularly like " the news of the world in ink had always felt paper thin." —this line for me has impact—especially in this era of fake news and a general abandonment in the american press of objectivity. -glen kappy p.s. welcome to " the team." -gk
I knew you as a very good photographer, but never realized you are and even better poet. The poem is beautiful, Batt, both richly narrative and descriptive. Thank you.
beautiful poem sometimes the memory carries something wonderful sense and experience //
Thank you so much, Mahtab. It was an interesting one to write, as the real time experience of reaching the gardens and writing there, was interweaving with so many memories. A kind of magical day.
Battster, Solid action. My past does not include poetry, really, but this one evoked images of India and I've never set foot in the place. Nice work.
A fine start with a nice poem, Batt. You may like to read my poem, Love and Iust. Thanks
Thank you for commenting, Jazib. I am just getting my paces with PoemHunter. I will indeed read your poem that you suggest. All best.
