Years ago high in the hills
I met an awesome thin man
Upon his back he held
the largest load I have ever beheld
I named him the Load Carrier
Of the mountains
I was so remiss in not helping
This smiling man at the moment.
———
I met him again in a new form
On the Kathgodam to Delhi train
He worked so hard for all on board
For seven straight hours
With food and bags
Running in duty, dutiful in care
———
He knew I was ill and in a fever
He lifted all of mine onto the platform
And in return I gave him nothing
He gave me only the hugest smile
I am in debt now forever to
Two men of India
For the rest of eternity.
