Therapy. Poem by Michael Walker

There are very many who need therapy these days.
These sensitive people may get counselling sessions
and healing words from a psychologist or psychotherapist;
but less fortunate people need long-term medication.

Some trust in xanax, prozac, diazepam or sertraline,
while others throw these tablets in the bin.
Some find that reading poetryis therapeutic,
while others get a buzz chilling out with pop music.

Some seek help from a health professional:
others are in and out of a priest's confessional.
Some eagerly take up pilates, yoga, older ones tai chi,
learning to breathe and meditate like a maharishi.

Some strive like gymnasts for suppleness and agility
by going to the gym and onto the floor mats then the bar.
Others, like Olympic athletes, go distance running daily,
knowing that it puts 'feel-good'endorphins in the body.

As a doctor said to me once: ' The answer to your problems
will not come out of a bottle'.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Except for the first stanza, I had this in rhyming couplets, which many English poets use: aabb/ccdd/eeff/gghh.
Dr, P.J. Eynon introduced me to Christian counselling ('the Bible has God's solutions to man's problems', he would say.) , and I made a conscientious effort to walk down this path. At home I wrote out essays on the Old Testament and the New, which he gave me for 'homework'.
This doctor always championed exercise and total physical fitness, which I took to eagerly and have kept up to this day.
'maharashi'= An Indian advanced instructor in the Hindu faith, which includes breathing techniques and meditation. I practise deep breathing often, myself.'Breathe' is a song by Kylie Minogue that I like: her best one in some ways.
Two other songs that lift me up when I feel down:
'I'm On My Way', by The Proclaimers, a Scottish brother-duo. The first line of the song is 'I'm on my way from misery to happiness'. I persuaded myself that I was too.
'Up', by Shania Twain from my DVD ' Shania Twain. Live in Chicago'.
These songs are therapeutic to me.(maybe not to you) .

You are very generous with your praise and I appreciate that very much. It makes me more confident to write the next poem.

You are right in that these tablets make you drowsy, tired, not your real, best self at all. Each person has to find their own best therapy, I think.
