There Was A Country Poem by Dr Anthony Onoja

There Was A Country

Our ancestors fought their masters with bare chests
In cruelty, they were tossed across the shores of Africa
A generation with voices was born
The emancipation of our beloved struggle by founding fathers
In the glory of oneness, we borne a new nation
Across the Western Sahara to the coast of Atlantics
Our strength lies in our diversity
our oneness lies in our togetherness
How then have we descended so low?

We now have no homes to call our own
We die a thousand times each day we bear to see the light
Our voices were lost
hate is in the air and death has ridden our huts
Hunger seeks to strangle our children

The world watches us as we burn
The giant has indeed fallen to his knees
The day religion came to us, we die
The time we love the holy books more than our kinsmen
we die
we die as a nation when we see the mirrors of tribe

See us now at the mercy of godless men
Oh, Nigeria, who indeed did this to you?
Remember the cry of your children
For Africa await you to lead
Wake up Nigeria! !
Wake up Nigerians! !
Wake up Africans! !
