They Are My Time Keepers Poem by NHIEN NGUYEN MD

Usually I wake up at five o'clock in the morning
On my work day as well as on my day off.
Sometimes, I stay in bed a little longer when I don't go to work
So some friends may not say that I'm not flexible.

My two cats usually await outside my closed bedroom door
And usually they are there before I open the door.
Sometimes I stay longer in bed just to test their behavior
To hear, if they meow for me to open the door

Usually, they scratch the door gently with their paws
And usually, they scratch and then they pause
As if they give me time to respond to their call
Before they make the last choice of urgent call.

This means there is a silent truce before they pound on the door.
Their pounding urgency is clearly announced like their fire siren.
Surely enough, I jump out of bed and the door is immediately opened.
Happily, they follow me to their feeding place in the kitchen.

CHÚNG LÀ NGƯỜI GIỮ GIỜ CHO TÔI

Thường thì tôi thức dậy năm giờ sáng
Ngày tôi nghỉ hay ngày phải đi làm
Nhưng ngày nghỉ đôi khi tôi nằm lán
Để bạn tôi không có cớ than van.

Hai con mèo thường đợi tôi ngoài cửa
Và ngồi đó, sẵn chờ bước tôi ra
Nhưng đôi khi tôi nằm thêm chút nữa
Để chờ nghe nếu mèo sẽ khóc than.

Theo lệ thường, chúng gõ tay thật nhẹ
Và thường thì, sau khi gõ chờ xem
Như thể nó cho tôi giờ sửa soạn
Trước khi dùng kế chót: tối hậu thơ.

Yên lặng dứt, khi thân mèo đập cửa
Tiếng đập to như cứu hỏa còi vang
Tôi lập tức nhảy ra và mở cửa
Hai con mèo sung sướng tới phòng ăn.
