Treason Poem by Jean Mallette

Treason

Rating: 5.0

Dissatisfied, you march the streets
With pickets, stones, and hate to spread,
And in your heart, you wish defeat
For Uncle Sam-
You wish him dead,
While you, yourself, are turning RED.
You say you want a world that's free,
And you will force your equal rights,
And if it cost Democracy,
Then it, at least, was worth the fight.
But when dissension finally takes
This hallowed fortress of defense,
The nation's strength will quickly break-
And then my friend, just guess who wins?
'I'd rather be red than dead, ' you said.
And you may have your reason,
But if you don't want chains-too bad!
They'll call you down for treason.
They'll march into your home and drag
Your mother to the street outside;
They'll stand her 'neath a foreign flag,
Behind her back, her hands are tied.
'Too old to work; what use is she?
The old ones all must now be slain.'
But donot try to set her free,
Nor let them hear that you complain,
For they will say that you're not RED
And shoot you down for treason.
And then they'll take your wife away
And use her as they please;
Your child will go while you must stay,
And all you've got, they'll seize.
They'll work you 16 hours straight-
You'll labor for your bread and rent,
But, donot let them see your hate
Nor dare to show your discontent.
And don't complain to your best friend
Or strive to overthrow the rule.
The KGB will turn you in.
Then once again, you'll be the fool.
The scarlet snake moves subtly
Amid the radicals and foes.
Its venom spreads Autocracy
Witin a moment's overthrow.
There is no end to RED but DEAD,
And so you'll have to please them.
If not, you'll come to wish you had,
For they'll nail you down for treason.
