J'ai dit que tu serais mon amante.
Tu as ri de ce que j'ai dit.
J'ai perdu mon emploi pour toujours.
On me comptait parmi les morts.
J'ai balaye les chambres de marbre,
Mais tu m'as renvoye en bas.
Tu m'as empeche de croire
Jusqu'au moment ou tu m'as laisse savoir:
Que ce n'est pas moi qui aime-
C'est l'amour qui me saisit.
Quand la haine vint avec sa parcelle,
Tu interdis la livraison.
Et quand la faim de sa touche
Se leve de la faim,
Tu chuchotes, 'Tu as assez aime',
Maintenant permets a moi d'etre l'Amante'.

I would like to translate this poem
She will be active rather than passive. This is love that amazes mind time to time. Due to expectation of love job is lost. The moment of knowing comes slowly and life blooms with duty and beauty. Cohen's love was brilliant love. This poem is brilliant poem and excellent translation is done...10
Thanks for typing this astute comment. The poem raises questions about the male (active) and female (passive) roles in love. Those roles can be reversed, as you notice so well. Cohen was so honest in what he wrote about romantic love, I think.
