Twin Warning Poem by Paul Butters

Twin Warning

The Dellotronian spaceship leaves hyperspace
At a deep-space solar system on the galaxy fringe.
"There they are! " announces the Watch,
"The planet twins."
"Second and third planets? " the captain asks.
"That's right.
Computer says the second one teemed with life,
Which perished
Before the third planet
Blossomed,
Then died."
"Why? "
"Because each in turn succumbed
To global warming.
We cannot land on either:
Both are covered with lava flows,
And crushed by high pressure carbon-dioxide."
"Their names? "
"Venus and Earth."
