Two boys fishing
Short trousers, grubby knees
Sitting on river bank
Sharing sweets, fizzy drinks
Wondering what life will bring.

Two teenage boys fishing
Long trousers, learning to shave
Sitting on river bank
Talking of kissing girls
Excited about going on dates with girls.

Two young men in church
Wedding suits, groom and best man
Standing at the altar
For bride radiant in white
Arriving with her father.

Two middle-aged men
Warm clothing against the cold
Sitting on a river bank
Talking of mortgages, school fees
Son and daughter soon to wed.

Two elderly men, frail white haired
Overcoats, scarf and gloves
Standing beside a river bank
Grandfathers, looking back at life
Thankful for friendship shared.
