Underestimating Macbeth Poem by Seamus O' Brian

Underestimating Macbeth

Rating: 5.0

You think you know me;
Your eyes measure me
In terms of the honor I
Wear, the title by which
I am addressed, the fine
Linens that cover me,
the comforts I enjoy,
and you think
You know me.
Your lying lips address
A king, you bow and grin,
Assuming I was born
Into nobility, eased gently
to this position of honor.
You know not that I am
The miscarriage of peasants
Knotted and gnarled by
The teeth of the earth
And the bones of hell,
Carved by the wind from the
mountains and ice; forged
from this land by sweat and blood;
That the crown on my head
Was ripped from the ground
By the edge of the sword
That is pointed even now
At the blackness of your
Lying, pretending heart.

'Lay on, Macduff,
And damned be him who first cries,
‘Hold, enough! ''

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Susan Williams 27 December 2016

Who are you? This is writing such as is found in Shakespeare and Hemingway and all Literary Giants in the fields of poetry and drama and prose. Oh My Word, you shine above the rest of us and for crying out loud that includes the few giants I already found here in PH. I am putting this on my Favorite List and I have the feeling I shall be putting all your poems on My Favorite List. I sincerely believe that every day one of your poems should appear as Poem of the Day. 10+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Dear Susan, though I have many words (and love to use them) , I have no words to describe the deep happiness that your gracious, encouraging words cause to well up in my soul as I read them. I hesitate to take such high praise into my heart, as if it may disappear forever, or I might find myself tomorrow ever so unworthy. I long to write words that touch hearts, move souls even as mine has been moved by powerful writing, to produce writing that one day may be considered worthy of publishing. And when I do, it will be largely due to the encouragement I have found in this little community of writers, none so eloquently expressed as that which comes from your heart and your pen. Thank you, thank you, thank you, always :) S

Or a Wolf in sheep's clothing. Does anyone really know who others are? Very enjoyable read. Annette

Oh, Annette, you hit that one on the head. I try to pound it into my children not to get too close to anyone until they really know who they are, and that is so difficult. You really have to watch how people treat other people over time to know what is inside them. You can't know someone until you marry them, go into business with them, or oppose them. Then their real nature becomes evident. Thank you, Annette. :) S
