Very Human Eyes Poem by Uriah Hamilton

Very Human Eyes

So in love with ancient days
of sunlit avenues and flowery dawns,
I declare a reverence for life
and ghost appearances
from the wine-sweet graves
of the ones I love.

I've sat down in summer parks
and beside abandoned railroad tracks
to mediate on prayerful afternoons
and listen to birdsong
and quietly weep.

I've bought roses in the marketplace,
I've kissed the cheek of a sacred face
who pointed out the path to enlightenment
and a swift escape from bitterness
and malignant regrets.

I've fought with agents of despair
and fiends with destroyed hopes
and desperate dreams,
I've done battle in an hour of tears
and conquered both self-doubt
and manufactured fears.

I've confronted men
who thought they were deities,
I've met girls in city streets
who brought me to my knees
on Saturday nights of forgotten reveries.

My heart has been dark and furious,
my voice has been loud in empty places
when I was pleading for forgiveness
and a compassionate touch from any stranger,
I've been ignorant of the danger
of failing to appreciate any act of kindness,
but I've survived another chance to glimpse
into the very human eyes of self-redemption.
