Virunga

Rating: 3.5

The last of the mountain gorillas
are in danger of disappearing.
A greedy oil company which cares
nothing for these marvelous creatures
Is illegally attempting to drill for oil
under Lake Edward,
which violates international law since
Lake Edward is in Virunga National Park.

This is the oldest national park in Africa.

Gorillas are so much like us.
They laugh. They cry.
They like to be held
when they hear the sounds
of the guns and the bombs
from the civil war in the Congo.

Gorilla parents have been
killed by poachers so that
their babies may be sold
on the black market.

They get sick.
Adult female Gashangi was just
diagnosed with melanoma. This is
the first known case in non-human
primates, not just in mountain
gorillas.

Does anyone care?
Should we just let them
become extinct?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
SOCO is the oil company. I discovered these facts by watching the movie 'Virunga' on Netflix. (Caution: The movie is family friendly except for about 5 minutes of intense swearing somewhere in the middle. Much of the movie is in French with English subtitles. It's when they start speaking English that the swearing starts!)

In September 2013 one of the park employees attempted to prevent SOCO agents from building an illegal structure in the park. The next day he was arrested, tortured, and held without charge for 17 days.

In April 2014 another employee filed a report on SOCO's illegal activities to the Congolese legal authorities. As he returned to the park he was ambushed by unknown gunmen and shot several times. He survived.

Despite claiming in June 2014 that they would halt operations, SOCO has refused to withdraw completely from Virunga.
The company continues to undermine the park, yet denies any wrongdoing.

A poet for a cause. A beautiful and praiseworthy effort of passing a message and information about cruelty towards animals to many people..I wish your genuine wish is fulfilled and these animals are saved.
