We Grow Accustomed To The Light Poem by gershon hepner

We Grow Accustomed To The Light

We grow accustomed to the light
when sitting in the dark,
but lose, when light is shining bright,
perception of the spark
that’s only seen those times we yearn
for light, and shadows reign
The total dark we tend to spurn
brings with the gloom a gain,
for light in which the eyes can see
the dawn, when days begin,
hides sparks that are the apogee
of orbits that they spin,
but can’t be seen when we are blinded
by light that always hides
the sparks of which we are reminded
in gloom the dark provides.

With apologies to Emily Dickinson, who wrote:

We Grow Accustomed to the Dark, –
When Light is put way –
As when the Neighbor hold the Lamp
To Witness her goodbye –

It is true that we grow accustomed to the light, for we hate darkness. A fine write.
