Were We Just A Mirage, The Land Of The Free? Poem by Sandra Feldman

Were We Just A Mirage, The Land Of The Free?

Up until now we've been different!
Yes, different in a most unusual way,
Giving opportunity and well being,
To so many who came our way,
Defending, Liberty and Human Rights,
Correcting past mistakes,
Using equilibrium even at very high stakes.

Now,
All of that has changed!
'You didn't build that'
'I will tell you what to be,
What you can or can't have in misery,
I, I, I, Me, Me, Me'
A true Nightmare, not a fantasy.
And furthermore,
A treasonous deal has been signed,
That not only endangers us,
But the whole World,
Are we now going to let this happen,
Without saying a word? Cowardly?
Land that was free, I cry bitterly for Thee!

Behind this poem is the instinct to hold our American democracy to a higher standard of morality ans service than most nation-states acknowledge, and as you rightly observe, most US citizens have abandoned. What has gone wrong? The USA is the most powerful country but what do we do with our power? It's very troubling and I for one make the choice to work within the arts and ignore politics. It's time to sing together a chorus from the WHU anthem -
