What Kind Of Poet Are You? Poem by Eddie Roa

What Kind Of Poet Are You?

Rating: 5.0

Why can't a modernist be
more like an imagist? said one

A modernist's craft it seems
Plays hide and seek
Not wanting to be found out
In one easy read
Muttering gibberish-like
Imagery seemingly indiscrete
But couching a hidden gem

Oh, why can't an imagist be
More like a modernist? said the other

An imagist tells you what is what
No games nor riddles in his verse
What you see is what you get
Lyrical lines, image well defined
Gushing populist sentiment
Yet profundity lies within

It may be a matter of choice
No right, no wrong no doubt
No one no better than the other
Apples and pears cannot compare

So true, we cannot compare one from the other for they have a unique way of expressing themselves. It is also depends on the mood of the writer what kind of style he wanted to have in conveying his message. One may not be very effective in writing poetry in allegory style, so he prefers to have eloquence or vividness in his works....and the other way around with the another writer...great craft...10 for sharing this with me.

Oh! I forgot to answer your poetic title...I am a poet who loves to try and learn all fields of poetry and creative writing....Sometimes crafting both styles in one composition...adventurous modern poetry should be named...

Like asking - - why cant a woman be more like a man - and ultimately the Venus-Mars situation will always aspire to create diversions - - - which is true too of poetic diversity - - so let there be the magic all-sorts and be thankful - - we love them all........ top marks for this from Fay....

I wrote this to provoke a discussion among my poet friends. You will have to pardon the loose definitions of imagist and modernist in the poem. Actually there is a lot of overlap between the two genres. They necessarily will have elements that could be found in each because poetic movements are reactions to predecessors and despite the conscious effort to be differrent some essential poetic elements are retained. A more understandable way of describing these two genres would be by poet groupings as is conveniently done by critics.

The essence of poetry is to capture the magic and music of experiences or ideas in a concise way. Experiences that come to us largely through the senses is filled with sensory details called imagery. I can not imagine a poem without imagery. Modern poetry is like playing hide and seek, maybe like a cryptic crossword puzzle, and this is a challenge to find the clues. We do not have the facilities on this site to leave sufficient large blank spaces (these allow the eye then mind to rest on phrases or words) to nip modernist poetry in the bud! Your poem is a brilliant idea to get poets to think and mull over what is best....thank you for your clever thought provoking lines. Karin Anderson

In my opinion imagery is a basic ingredient for good poetry. Without imagery poetry is like a painting without colors. An Imagist (not in its traditional meaning) can be a Modernist or Post Modernist. Imagist poets in fact modernize poetic language. Early 20th. century UK and US poets did this wonderfully. I think poetry should be judged from its contents, form, style and diction, not by the literary movements.
