Whenever I Wished Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Whenever I Wished

I never thought I would be,
The one in need of love.
I had been the one giving,
And not receiving it.
On the basis of my wishes dreamed.
When young and hopes unfulfilled,
Seemed so far away.

I never thought I would be,
The one in need of love.
I knew it would be easy for me.
To have it near me sit as company.
Like a pet accepting.

And here I sit without the love I wish.
Even though in my younger years,
It was given to me too quickly.
And perhaps that is why it was dismissed.
I thought I had to qualify for it,
As a prerequisite.
To have it never go away.

I never thought I would be,
The one in need of love.
I had been giving and not receiving it.
On the basis of my wishes dreamed.
And those wishes seemed for me,
To come have come too easy...
Then.

I never thought I would be,
The one in need of love.
I knew it would be easy for me.
To have it near me sit as company.
Or so I thought.
But I did not see me aging,
Without it near to be given whenever I wished.
