Whenever It Benefits Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Whenever It Benefits

Defending decadence.
And one's right to devalue,
The quality of life of others.
Many may wish to remind the multitudes,
Their activities are defined...
In their quilled penned constitution.
Centuries ago when ideals were then implemented.
With them meant to inspire,
A higher consciousness to achieve.
To believe this would be the standard.
Protecting such qualities as entitlements.
As an expectation to keep a nation great.

Also kept had been respect,
For one's religious belief.
Accepted not to affect how one prayed.
Regardless who professed,
Themselves to be Christians of faith.

And yet...
Like the constitution.
And admitted religious beliefs.
To claim followed daily faithfully.
Few have yet been discovered to obey,
Neither the constitution nor the Ten Commandments.
Although quick to re-interpret them to be imagined,
Whenever it benefits the 'right' to defend...
Their offensive behavior.
And the truth that reveals the obvious to witness,
A loving of their wicked ways to deceive.
As if an objective to be repeatedly forgiven.
With this as an expectation,
To become exceptions to following laws.
And obeying God's rules to continue,
The conflicts and mayhem they cause.
