White with dew the grass surrounds the pond
and soaks my feet that walk in it unshod;
in early morning air of which I’m fond
I wonder if I'm more awake than God.
Inspired by an article on classical Chinese poetry by Adam Kirsch in May 20,2009 issue Of TNR. Kirsch describes Ezra Pond as “the inventor of Chinese poetry for our time” and quotes his translation of a poem by Li Po, titled “The Jewel Stairs' Grievance”:
The jewel steps are already quite white with dew,
It is so late that the dew soaks my gauze stockings,
And I let down the crystal curtain
And watch the moon through the clear autumn.
