Who Gave It To Them? Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Who Gave It To Them?

Excuse me...
I am new in this neighborhood.
And...
Well,
I don't mean to be nosey...
But while I am at it,
I overhead you two saying...
Take back what belongs to you,
Am I right?

'Yeah.
And...? '

Well...
What is it that you wish to take back?
How did they get it in the first place?
Who gave it to them?
And where were you two,
When that happened?
And how do you know what they have,
Has not been given to someone else?

'You're right.
You are nosey.
And for your information...
What was taken from us...
Was taken from you as well.'

Oh?
I don't think so.
I wouldn't have allowed that.

'We're not talking about an 'identity'.
We're talking about the government.
We need to take it back.'

Well...
Again,
How did they get it in the first place?
Who gave it to them?
And where were you two,
When that happened?
And how do you know what they have,
Has not been given to someone else?
