Words Well Worth 8: Too Much Leads To Dire Destiny

Bali got bound by boundless charity,
Suyodhan, by behaviour so haughty,
Ravan, was lost in lust, dauntless desire,
Too much always leads to destiny dire.

The transliteration of the subhāśhita is given below:

ati dānāt balih baddhahhi ati mānāt suyodhanah |
vinaśhţah rāvaņah laulyātati sarvatra varjayet ||

This verse shows the dangers of extreme behaviour. Bhagavad-Gita also emphasised on this (not fasting too much, nor eating too much; not sleeping too much, nor remaining awake; etc) . We also know of Buddha's middle path.

ati: to much, extreme; dānāt: by charity; by (vainglorious)giving; balih:king Bali, renown for charity; baddhau: was fettered, was caught in the snare of his own words; hi: only, indeed; ati mānāt: due to too much self pride; suyodhanah: who, in Mahabharata, is better known as Duryodhana; vinaśhţo: was lost; was destroyed; rāvaņah: Ravana of Ramayana; the demon king of Lanka (Ceylon): laulyāt:due to lust and desire (He abducted Rama's wife Sita): ati sarvatra: too much, extreme is everywhere; varjayet: (should)be avoided, discarded.

No, you are perhaps not getting the point. My purpose s different. India has a wealth of literature in Sanskrit, a rich heritage not found anywhere and so ancient, Unfortunately our children are cut off from this. Today, they not only know not Sanskrit, but even their own mother tongue. This is the reason I give Sanskrit text in Roman transliteration, and add meanings of the words in the shloka. Besides, you can't be ignorant.
