Years Ago Today Poem by Tamra Craft

Years Ago Today

One more year has come and gone
More distance in between me and my past.
When I was there time appeared to go so slowly
But now that I’m here, I wish it hadn’t gone by so fast.

I drank from some of the sweetest souls.
Their essence tickled as it slid down my insides.
I never knew the right times to say yes or no till too late.
So many tear drops dressed in smiling disguises.

Though I may never go back to change my mind,
I often entertain certain private notions,
Where I give in, let you into my secrets.
Where I swim in your eyes, my azure oceans.

I take the other path, and see where it leads me
Never knowing if it would be better than the one I took.
Some of those memories will be sang with only the good notes.
I only pick the beautiful words for your chapters in my book.

I still see your eyes as you savor me, like scarlet sugar
You said, drunk off of more than my blood.
You guarded me with your protective arms.
For seconds, everyone else disappeared, only the two of us.

I gazed around a room, now empty, the air metallic
From the splatters and pools, both our shirts stained crimson.
You pried your lips, swollen, from my wound to take mine.
At some point they all came back, I was never the same again.

I still see you lighting up a cigarette, you make cancer beautiful.
I see you hand it over to me, you pull me close, I don’t remember what you say.
But the sound of your voice is what matters, not the words.
I remember every memory of you, what we did years ago today.
