Younique Poem by Loretta Shively

Younique

I have a small sister whose hair is bright red;
but my hair is all brownish-blondish instead
My brother's got handsome black curls for his crown;
and Grandma's hair's white, though it used to be brown.

My sister has green eyes, but my eyes are blue,
And brother's are brown, and my mama's are, too.
My sister's got freckles all over her face.
On me, impish moles grow all over the place.

My daddy is tall and as strong as a bull.
His brother's a midget, but smarter in school.
My uncle is fat, but my aunt's very thin;
though her face is smooth, he got hair on his chin.

My Grandpa's big nose has been passed on to Dad;
and my great big feet are like grandmother had.
My cousin inherited ears that stick out.
His down syndrome sister's the sweetest no doubt.

My brother is black and his teeth, straight and white.
But my teeth are crooked and my skin is light.
And sports come real easy for sister and him,
while I get all screwed when I'm placed in a gym.

My dad likes to write, and my mom sure can sing!
It's me who can draw a real live-looking thing.
I like to ride horse, milk the cows, rake, and mow.
But sister would read, clean the house, bake, and sew.

It's all more amazing the deeper you go:
for some folks are fast, and the rest of us slow.
All totally different yet somewhat the same;
there's some that are healthy while others are lame.

We each have a fingerprint totally ours.
Our tongue print is, too, with its swirls, lines, and bars.
We each have a laugh that's uniquely our own.
God's endless ideas are awesomely shown.

We each have a heart, each a soul, and a mind.
And it's up to us our best talent to find.
Be happy. Be free. Be yourself. Be your best.
To just be yourself is a very great test.

Be honest and brave: let your true colors show.
You shine like a star when you go 'gainst the flow.
Go, just be yourself, with a smile on your face:
the blessing is yours. No one can fill your place!
