The village revives
when the pilgrims throng the land of their birth
at Christmas,
that roots may be renewed
in the fresh water spring
down the path of the ancestors
kept trim and warm
by bare pilgrim feet
back and forth
day after day
in a time-belt.

Sometimes clay pots were broken
and fights ensued
when we shoved and pushed
to catch the fountain
at the ancestors’ feet
treading the bountiful rocks,
water's roots.
They smiled approval
and sometimes slithered down
with the fresh water
and came home ...
