Childhood Mystery

From my window one summer night,
In the sky I glimpsed a fiery light.
Like a kite of flame it tossed and danced,
Was I the only one who chanced
To see that marvel in the sky?
Was it viewed by any other eye?
No mention ever came to ear,
Of awe or wonder, dread or fear.
So many years have since gone by,
Helpless I have watched them fly.
And much that was a mystery,
Now to my eyes is clear to see.
The things that in that far-off day
Could truly take my breath away,
I scarcely give a passing thought,
The mystery is all for naught.
