Opening Day Haikus

I follow all day
Through winter wheat and dead weeds
The tracks in the snow

The buck that in Fall
I saw behind every tree
Is nowhere in sight

Leaves, frozen in ice
Announce my path through the woods
And off go the deer

Squirrels, rabbits and grouse
(Where were they in October?)
I see everywhere

The geese heading south
Bid goodbye to the north skies
I watch as they pass

I sit on a stump
Fumble through my cold bag lunch
Which I eat at ten

The hours pass by
Eyes heavy, I nap under
The cold purple ...
