Kentucky Derby – 128

In excruciating pain,
Eight Belles lay
In the field of Legends
And claimed the rich brown dirt
of the Kentucky Derby.

Adrenalin Surging
She flew
Closing in on Big Brown,
Nostrils flaring,
She sniffed victory,
As if she knew
Her fated destiny.

Every last beat,
every pulse,
all her energy
spent in equine pursuit
of the Herculean chesnut mare.

Big Brown lunged
across the finish line,
Eight Belles close behind,
Tumbled and fell,

A tear in her eye,
Eight Belles lay
In the field of Legends
