In The Life Of The Inanimate

the sun tumbled down the staircase
filling every crack and nook
with honest definition
the breeze was there too
it crept in cold from the night
and settled on our fingers and toes
in the fashion of eskimos, or lepers
the newspaper was laid unfold
in the company of scrambled eggs and toast
and the coffee, born from desire
laid warmth where the sun could not
the plates remained quietly in the hutch
and across the way the television
observed with it's thin layer of dust
the silverware damp in the sink
