Those Bare Branches

The branches are bare,
as that time of year,
of autumn's stars, smiles,
and softened trials.

But behind her face,
in that silent place,
where darkness does live,
nothing, autumn gives.

No streets of soft gold,
that time has long told.
From there all's been torn,
since she was new-born.

Season's dear pleasure,
she cannot treasure.
For she knows not life,
only endless strife.

One day she might see,
the rose or the bee.
Those things that whisper
life's smallest grandeur.
