I Know He Touched You

I know he touched you
I know I didn't know
Please forgive me,
we were only nine years old

I wore black for you.
Mourning.
Your child's-smile
remained unbroken.

Until the first fist fight
teeth shattered on the ground.
You're scarred in your temple.
Someone stole your coat from the lost and found.
When you get home,
there's hell to pay.
A beer in one hand
the other red across your face.

You might make it to eighteen.
You might run away.
I'll remember your milk carton snapshot
but I forgot your name.
