Mood Swing

after Joshua Redman


I never saw Jass until she walked in
stirring the smoke in the club

the saxophone moaned and wailed
tearing introspection
then placed the pieces like damp rags
over everyone's eyes

Jass blended into the crowd
her dress changed from fern
green to existential black
every face in the club
became her face

and I knew that
was why I’d gone there – to be caught
in that mood

when the bass guitar began to groove
Jass appeared before me
she took my hands
then leaned her body into mine
