A Ballad On The Normandy Invasion Poem by Gayathri Seetharam

A Ballad On The Normandy Invasion

A ballad on the Normandy Invasion
-Gayathri B. Seetharam
I write a ballad for all those brave soldiers
Who landed on Normandy Beach
And if blood is the colour of their character,
And heart is the content of their soul
Their hearts beat rapidly at the danger
That lurked in every corner
And their blood flowed hot
And coursed through their veins;

Was it all for their country
And for the safety of the world
Or was it a test of their own courage
A fight against destiny
The enemy Nazis were armed
And ready to kill
As they were;

It became a battle of weapons
And a meeting of wills
The Allied Forces won
Fair and square
And out of the 15,000 Canadians who fought,
359 did not live to tell the tale
And their gravestones say,
Some brave men reach their graves early
But they pave the way for a beautiful future;

And on D-Day, Canada had 1074 soldiers hurt
And I hope they all made it home
Safe and cocooned
For a heroes' homecoming
As all the soldiers and Navy men and airforce men
Who were honoured by history.
