A Dad's Prayer Poem by Bala Singelee

A Dad's Prayer

Rating: 4.8

A DAD’S PRAYER

Forget me not, now that I am old and frail
Forget me not, now that I am cold and hungry

I was once young and healthy like you
Cherished by family and friends alike

Now, forever short of life’s basic necessities
It is a daily struggle to make ends meet

I am one of the multitudes of old folks
Forgotten and left to fend for themselves

Huddled in a corner of this cold and unlit room
Loneliness is my one and only friend

Hungry, I gazed out of my window with hope
That you will pass by and glance my way

You no longer remember me as your kin
This material world has changed you all

I toiled day and night for your bright future
The hard work has taken its toll on me

The years have gone in the blinking of an eye
The good time we shared is distant memory

Now that my hair is grey and bones are weak
With skin all wrinkled, not a pretty sight to see

My health going down, my memory failing me
I am all alone waiting for the last bell to toll

Till then, be kind, spare a me a thought
Otherwise, no point crying when I am gone

Amazingly honest and truthful, an accurate portrayal of the aged in our day and age. After working all their lives for their families, now being abandoned for things of the world, while they struggle to get food and shelter. Children need to step up and take care of their elderly parents while they are still here. There are no tomorrows at this late stage in their lives. Totally honest and forthright poem, wrenching our hearts within. Thank you so much for this beautiful and heartfelt poem! ! ! I give it a 10! Thank you for sharing with the world, your message needed to be conveyed throughout the younger generations.. RoseAnn

A well articulated piece of poetry elegantly penned with conviction. A food for thought for all those who abandoned and neglect their aged parents. Lovely poem bristling with insight. Thanks for sharing. Please read my poem MANDELA - THE IMMORTAL ICON.
