At long last regained she has her voice,
But a gifted soul wilts without choice;
And what her affront was?
Lauder she drew applause,
Ego played spoil-sport with wanton toys,
All for his envy's cause,
A case of losing poise,
A man kills his wife's joys.

Inklings of the malady were sure there. People talked in hushed tones. What was guessed long ere has now come true. The wife of a Bharat Ratna sitarist and his guru's daughter admitted that she retired from public life because her husband didn't like that she drew forth more applause than him. How sad! A gifted sitar had to get muted.

Thank you Dr Swain, but even great people can't rise above petty envies, and a rare heritage of Sitar music is lost to larger audience..

We have seen and heard about such husbands many around us...the wife should not be applauded at all...she should not excel...she be an artist or an expert in any other field... this poem is highly expressive and inspiring...great work
I agree with you. Her husband being himself a great sitarist of world repute need not have worried, but then... Besides, no consideration was given to the fact that she was the daughter of her guru. Thanks for the feedback dear poet.
