A Philosophical Debate Poem by Mihaela Pirjol

A Philosophical Debate

Rating: 5.0

‘Nature has given to man a disposition to pity,
and the power of comprehending truth.'

—Voltaire, ‘A Philosophical Dictionary, Volume III.'

If human beings

are gifted by nature

with conscience;

and animals, with instinct:

how happens,

that often times,

humans lose their gift,

whilst animals

never

lose their instinct?

We can gauge conscience from those who do not have it. Psychopaths and sociopaths lack it. This is a defect of mind. Most of us have a conscience depending on the situation. It is not universally the same. We also have so-called instincts. Animals are instinctual, as far as we know. Some may have a conscience. We can not therefore generalise. They can lose instincts by conditioning or brain defects.

A very insightful piece of poetry! Liked the quote of Voltaire that synchronizes the theme of the poem! Thanks for sharing! (10)

Animals are 'conscious' (Most are not sentient) Humans are still driven by many instincts. We have yet to fully embrace our humanity tho.
