A Sapphire - Poem by Dilantha Gunawardana

From the perimeter of the metropolis of gold (Ratnapura)
Awakens a glimmering wonder from a creek's cold
From the cold damp corners of a watershed
She sprouts to the open from her cradle bed
Enshrined in a shell by the filth of the earth
Yet her wishful soul burns like a capacious hearth
As the palms of man dishevel her birth stitch of dirt
To capture her opulence in the vast blue ocean's mirth
Like the ocean she dons a kaleidoscope of color
As the scattering light embraces her glistening valor
She promises to stitch the tapestry of a poor man's dreams
As she metamorphoses delta blues to felicity's extremes
She will leaven civilizations from mud huts to citadels
She will kindle the fire of hope to poverty's shells
As her destiny exchanges hands to lavish prosperity
For the downtrodden to bask in a stone's indemnity
She is a time-tested symbol of an eternity of love
Garnished with blessings from the rupturing heavens above
As a ring exchanges hands in the festivities of marraige
As young lovers are drawn in a macadamia white carriage
She spills her offspring like a troupe of tadpoles
Polished and cut still dazzling in their blissful blue souls
She will continue to sculpt the future of our nation, the isle of Serendib
As she catapults to her destiny from her contemporary crib
